Ear Wax Removal

I strongly recommend that you use olive oil based ear drops, such as Earol, for 3-5 days before your appointment. A combination of your medical history and ear exam results will determine the most suitable method for wax removal.

Your wax removal appointment will take approximately 45 mins.

I will ask a few questions to gather information regarding your general ear health and then perform an otoscopy, which examines your ear canals and ear drums using specialist equipment. I will then discuss the findings and advise on what to do next. This information is also recorded, to help keep track of any changes in your ear over time.

If Microsuction is suitable, and you consent, I will talk you through the procedure. I will show you the equipment that will be used and explain how it works, you will then be asked to sign a consent form before the removal of any wax from your ears.

Once you are happy to go ahead I will use a magnifier and suction tube to gently remove any wax from inside your ear canal. After the wax removal has been performed I will check the health of your ears once more.

If, for any reason, I am unsuccessful in removing any wax, I will advise you on your next steps.

• Microsuction gently pulls the wax along the ear canal and out of the ear via a suction pump.

• Irrigation is the use of water to flush the wax out.
